Boxer ancestors
The gallery below presents the pictures of the types of dogs that are believed to be direct ancestors of the Boxer breed. These include various types of bullenbeizers, bulldogs and small mastiffs. These types of dogs were common throughout Western Europe in XV-XIX centuries and were used for guarding, large game hunting, as well as fighting with bulls, bears and other dogs. The Boxer is believed to derive directly from such dogs by the way of deliberate selection that was done by breeders in Germany in the late XIX century.
